Arshad Nadeem won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the Olympics in Paris on Thursday. He beat India’s Neeraj Chopra, who was the previous champion. This win gave Pakistan its first individual medal ever at the Summer Olympics.

Standing at six feet inches tall, Nadeem made his country proud by throwing the javelin 92.97 meters. He shattered the Olympic record by more than 2.50 meters, and the crowd, packed to full capacity, gave him a standing ovation.

“When I threw the javelin, I could feel it perfectly leaving my hand and I had a sense that it might just be an Olympic record,” said 27-year-old Nadeem.

Before Arshad’s incredible win, Pakistan had never secured an individual gold medal at the Olympics. The country’s three previous gold medals were all in field hockey, achieved by the team in 1960, 1968, and 1984.

Prior to Thursday, only two Pakistani athletes had earned individual Olympic medals: a wrestling bronze in 1960 and a boxing bronze in 1988. Since the 1992 Barcelona Games, Pakistan had not won any medals.

While the nation is celebrating, some on social media are incorrectly claiming that Nadeem broke a 118-year-old record. That’s not accurate.

In a post on X, sports journalist Faizan Lakhani questioned how the javelin thrower could have possibly broken such a record.

He pointed out, “The previous record for the best javelin throw at the Olympics was set by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. That’s been a record for 16 years.”

Lakhani said that the javelin throw was not even part of the Olympics 118 years ago. It was first added to the games in 1908.

The Olympics website also says: “The javelin throw has been part of the Olympics since 1908 for men. The women’s event was added in 1932.”

Did Arshad Nadeem break 118-year record

If we calculate, the claimed record would have been set in 1906, a year when the javelin throw was not even part of the Olympics.

In his post, Lakhani also explained: “Records build on each other, so when you break a record, the time is measured from the previous one.”

In the Olympic final, Arshad Nadeem set new records with his performance in the javelin throw. His achievements include:

– Gold Medal: Winning the gold medal, which was Pakistan’s first individual gold in Olympic history.

– Record-Breaking Throw: Setting a new Olympic record with his javelin throw, surpassing previous records.

– Historic Achievement: Becoming the first Pakistani athlete to win an individual gold medal and make a mark in the javelin throw event at the Olympics.
