Recently, Dr. Bakheet Ateeq Al Remeithi, the Consul General of the UAE in Karachi, revealed that the UAE has imposed a visa ban on Pakistani citizens. He explained that this decision comes in response to a number of complaints received over the past couple of months. In an interview with a private news channel, Dr. Remeithi discussed the reasons behind the ban, though he did not provide specific numbers or details.

Dr. Remeithi highlighted that social media activity is a key factor in the UAE’s visa decision process. He mentioned that what people share or like on social media can influence their chances of getting a visa. “If someone is causing trouble on social media, why should we issue them a visa?” he questioned, stressing the impact of online behavior on visa outcomes.

He also pointed out that every country has its own rules and regulations. Dr. Remeithi condemned actions that disrupt daily life in the UAE, including problems affecting essential services like hospitals. He further noted that speaking out against one’s own country and stirring up unrest while in the UAE is both inappropriate and unfair.

Addressing concerns about visa numbers, Dr. Remeithi shared that the UAE issued around 70,000 work visas and several lakhs of tourist visas in the past year and a half. He advised applicants to carefully check their documents to avoid issues with fake or duplicate verifications, even if it means traveling back to Pakistan for confirmation.

With approximately 1.7 million Pakistanis living in the UAE, making it the second-largest Pakistani expat community in the world, this visa ban has significant implications. According to the State Bank of Pakistan, remittances from the UAE to Pakistan totaled $2.55 billion in the fiscal year 2022. This highlights the important role the Pakistani workforce plays in the UAE, contributing to various sectors such as banking, real estate, media, and insurance.
