What are the rules of Qurbani? All you need to know

During the three days of Eid-Al-Adha, Muslims perform Qurbani, the annual animal sacrifice, to celebrate the end of Hajj. This ritual honors Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who dreamed that Allah asked him to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail (AS). Instead, Allah sent a ram to be sacrificed in Ismail’s place as a test. By sacrificing an animal each year, Muslims show their willingness to give up anything for Allah and fully submit to His will.

What are the rules for Qurbani?

Who should give Qurbani? When do we offer our sacrifice? Are there any additional considerations we should keep in mind?

Who has must to perform Qurbani?

Every Muslim must perform Qurbani. The only exceptions are as follows:

  1. Those who do not have enough money (Nisab value).
  2. Those who are not mentally sound.
  3. Those who are still kids and have not reached puberty.
  4. Those who are traveling and are far from home (about 40-45 kilometers).

You can perform Qurbani on behalf of others, including deceased individuals. However, grown-up children are expected to arrange and pay for their own Qurbani animals

When are the Qurbani sacrifices typically take place?

Qurbani takes place on the 10th, 11th, or 12th days of Dhul-Hijjah, which is when Eid ul-Adha is celebrated. Eid ul-Adha is also known as the Greater Eid, Bakra Eid, or Qurbani Eid. This year, Eid al-Adha will begin on either June 17th or 18th, depending on the sighting of the moon.

Who gets Qurbani meat?

When sharing Qurbani meat, divide it into three equal parts. Give these portions to family, friends, and those in need, regardless of their religion. If you are sharing the sacrifice with others, divide the meat by weight, not by guessing. Remember, you cannot buy the butcher’s share of the meat, fat, or other parts.

Which Animals can be sacrificed?

The animals chosen for sacrifice must meet minimum needs, such as their age and condition for Qurbani including:

  • Sheep and goats under one year old are suitable for one Qurbani each.
  • Cows or buffaloes under two years old can provide enough meat for seven Qurbani shares.
  • Camels under five years old can also provide enough meat for seven Qurbani shares.

Should I not trim my nails and hair if I am going to give Qurbani?

Different people have different opinions on whether cutting your nails and hair is not allowed or just looked down upon. According to the Hanbali school of thought and many scholars, it’s necessary to avoid cutting your hair and nails when giving Qurbani.

How many animals do I need to offer for sacrifice?

In the Hanafi tradition, it’s expected for every financially capable Muslim to contribute to Qurbani, and this is endorsed by many scholars. One share of Qurbani equals one sheep or goat, or one-seventh of a cow, buffalo, or camel.

Is it sensible to offer more than one Qurbani share? Would it be advisable for you to consider such an act? You have the option to donate one Qurbani share in Makkah and another elsewhere. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself performed multiple Qurbanis, setting an example for the Muslim community. Consequently, numerous Muslims choose to perform multiple Qurbanis as a tribute to their departed loved ones and in remembrance of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

How many Qurbani shares can one family give?

Every capable Muslim should be able to offer at least one Qurbani, which is divided into three parts. A small animal like a sheep or goat counts as one part of Qurbani. Larger animals like camels, cows, and bison can be equivalent to up to seven parts of Qurbani. According to the rules of Qurbani, a husband and wife can give the animal to each other, but the animal must be big enough for everyone to contribute their share. While it is not mandatory, households often donate a larger animal that is worth seven parts.

What is a Prophetic Sacrifice?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed a sacrifice on behalf of those in his community who could not afford to do so. This was for anyone who believed in the Oneness of Allah and acknowledged the Prophethood of Muhammad. [Tabarani and Ahmad]

After fulfilling his own obligation, the Prophet (peace be upon him) offered an additional sacrifice on behalf of Muslims who could not afford it. We encourage all our supporters to revive this forgotten Sunnah and help more people in need.
